Top Ten Tuesday: Series I’ve Been Meaning to Start

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish! Today’s prompt is “Series I’ve Been Meaning to Start but Haven’t”. This prompt also led me to acknowledge out loud the fact that I’m awful at finishing series! Even if I liked the first book(s), I get distracted and then don’t finish them, so stay tuned for a companion piece to this post about series I’ve started but haven’t finished yet, which I’ll post on the blog soon!

I’ll also include the summary of the first book in each series, as well as the link to Goodreads so that you can check them out if you’re interested!

#1. The Gentlemen Bastard Series

“In this stunning debut, author Scott Lynch delivers the wonderfully thrilling tale of an audacious criminal and his band of confidence tricksters. Set in a fantastic city pulsing with the lives of decadent nobles and daring thieves, here is a story of adventure, loyalty, and survival that is one part “Robin Hood”, one part Ocean’s Eleven, and entirely enthralling…

An orphan’s life is harsh — and often short — in the island city of Camorr, built on the ruins of a mysterious alien race. But born with a quick wit and a gift for thieving, Locke Lamora has dodged both death and slavery, only to fall into the hands of an eyeless priest known as Chains — a man who is neither blind nor a priest.

A con artist of extraordinary talent, Chains passes his skills on to his carefully selected “family” of orphans — a group known as the Gentlemen Bastards. Under his tutelage, Locke grows to lead the Bastards, delightedly pulling off one outrageous confidence game after another. Soon he is infamous as the Thorn of Camorr, and no wealthy noble is safe from his sting.

Passing themselves off as petty thieves, the brilliant Locke and his tightly knit band of light-fingered brothers have fooled even the criminal underworld’s most feared ruler, Capa Barsavi. But there is someone in the shadows more powerful — and more ambitious — than Locke has yet imagined.

Known as the Gray King, he is slowly killing Capa Barsavi’s most trusted men — and using Locke as a pawn in his plot to take control of Camorr’s underworld. With a bloody coup under way threatening to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the Gray King at his own brutal game — or die trying…”

I’ve heard that The Lies of Locke Lamora, which is the first book in the series, is incredible, so…it’s been sitting on my shelf for more than a year and a half. Whoops. If you read my blog, you know that I primarily read thrillers with a mix of YA/chick lit, however I randomly get moods to read fantasy books. I’m waiting for that mood to strike me again, and then this series will be the first one I pick up!

#2. The Maze Runner Series

“If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys whose memories are also gone.

Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade.

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.

Everything is going to change.

Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

Remember. Survive. Run.”

So the premise of this series sounds so good to me, BUT I’ve heard such mixed things about The Maze Runner that I’ve let it sit on my TBR for years! I feel like I might actually like it, so I really need to just commit and find out for myself!

#3. Legend Series

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 7.09.49 PM

“What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.”

This is another series that I went back and forth about reading, but I’ve heard so many good things about it that I want to see what all the fuss is about!

#4. Anna and the French Kiss Series

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 7.24.46 PM

“Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris–until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all…including a serious girlfriend.

But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?”

This series has always sounded so cute, and I own the first book but for some reason I just haven’t picked it up. I often prefer standalones, because I’m so bad at finishing series! I have no idea why. I get distracted with the hundreds of other books on my shelf and I end up not finishing series a lot. Does anyone else do that?? Please tell me I’m not the only one!

#5. The Dark Artifices Series

“In a kingdom by the sea…

In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?”

Okay, this one is probably the most shameful one on my list, because I am obsessed with The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices! I think I was nervous that I wouldn’t like The Dark Artifices as much (Cassandra Clare is bound to fail at some point, right?!), but I’ve seen nothing but great reviews about this series, so Ms. Clare just apparently can do no wrong when it comes to writing! I really do want to pick this series up soon, especially since the second book just came out.

#6. Red Rising Series

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 7.44.55 PM

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”

“I live for you,” I say sadly.

Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.”

The Red Rising series is another one that I’ve heard nothing but good things about, I just haven’t been in the mood to sit down and real long fantasy books lately! This series is definitely high up on my priority list for when I am, though! Have you read them? What did you think?

#7. The Half Bad Trilogy

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 7.48.03 PM

“Wanted by no one.
Hunted by everyone.

Sixteen-year-old Nathan lives in a cage: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most terrifying and violent witch, Marcus. Nathan’s only hope for survival is to escape his captors, track down Marcus, and receive the three gifts that will bring him into his own magical powers—before it’s too late. But how can Nathan find his father when there is no one safe to trust, not even family, not even the girl he loves?”

This series sounds sooooo good, and I love the covers (except for the fact that the font is vertical on the first book and horizontal on the second two…WHY must publishers do this to me?!) but it’s been on my shelf for months.

#8. The Bone Season Series

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 7.52.47 PM

“The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people’s minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing.

It is raining the day her life changes for ever. Attacked, drugged and kidnapped, Paige is transported to Oxford – a city kept secret for two hundred years, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. Paige is assigned to Warden, a Rephaite with mysterious motives. He is her master. Her trainer. Her natural enemy. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die.”

I’ve heard so much about this series on Goodreads and bookstagram, and it sounds so good! I’m dying to read them, and I do think I’ll read The Bone Season soon. It’s staring at me from it’s place on my shelf judging me for not having read it yet…

#9. Red Queen Series

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 7.55.34 PM

“This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.”

I will admit that this is another series that has some mixed reviews among my friends on Goodreads, but it sounds interesting, and the covers are so pretty that I’ll still read it!

10. All Souls Trilogy

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 7.59.23 PM

“A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.”

Not gonna lie, I definitely first noticed A Discovery of Witches because of the cover! It’s so pretty! That said, the plot sounded interesting too, so we’ll see!
