The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is about a teenage girl named Mara, who is in an accident that kills her best friend, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s sister. Mara is the only one who makes it out alive, the only problem is that when she wake up from a coma three days later, she doesn’t remember what happened. She doesn’t even remember being at the building where the accident occurred. To give Mara a fresh start, her family decides to move to Florida, so she can start over. Now Mara is having hallucinations. Hearing voices she shouldn’t be hearing, seeing people in mirrors that aren’t there, and seeing/feeling things that don’t exist. What’s happening to Mara and is she dangerous?

I LOVED this book. It’s been on my shelf for the last few years, and I finally got around to reading it and I’m SO glad I did! I was hooked from the very beginning. I’m a huge fan of horror movies, especially ones that deal with paranormal occurrences and hauntings, and this book read exactly the way a paranormal horror movie would. I could see it all in my head really vividly, and it made me wish there was a movie based on the book!

I really loved the characters in the book, too. The story is told from Mara’s point of view, but it also spends some time getting to know her brother Daniel, who was one of my favorites. He seemed to have that protective big brother thing down – he was always watching out for her and covering for her when needed. Then there’s her love interest, Noah, whom I adore! I can’t wait to read the sequel and read more about him! There is also her best friend Jamie, who is her first friend at school. The only problem is that about halfway through the book, he’s never seen again. I hope he comes back in the sequels, because he was an awesome character who was a great friend to Mara, and it would suck to see him just disappear for no reason.

I will say that the book did not end at all the way I thought it would, and I’d love to chat with others who have read the book about it! I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who might not have read it yet, so if you’d like to talk about it, feel free to message me privately on Goodreads, Twitter, or Instagram! All in all, I loved the book and rated it 5/5 stars. I could’t put it down and spend all day on Sunday reading it! I’m excited to read the sequels and see how everything ends.

  2. I have heard a lot of mixed review about this one, and have been hesitant to pick it up. But your review may have persuaded me.
