Books everyone loved that I…didn’t #unpopularopinion

The other day I completed a book tag, and one of the questions asked me to name a book that everyone loved that I didn’t. I started thinking about it and realized that I actually could think of a few that I didn’t love the way it seems everyone else does, so I decided to write a post about it and share some of my unpopular book opinions. Please don’t shun me!! I also want to be clear that I have zero issue with anyone who did like any of these books – clearly I’m in the minority here because they are all highly rated! All titles link to Goodreads ๐Ÿ™‚

The Retribution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer #3) by Michelle Hodkin

So let me start by saying, I loved the first book in this series, and then progressively got more and more let down by it. The second book I thought was only okay, and then I really didn’t like the last book at all, however it’s sitting at a 4.15Sha overall rating on Goodreads. Clearly, I’m in the minority here!

Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi

This one seems to be really hit or miss for people, but overall, it has great ratings on Goodreads (it currently has an overall rating of 4.01). For me, I couldn’t get past the writing. I know it was written in a very unique style…but I hated it. I hated it enough to not read the rest of the books in the series, either.

The Book Thief by Mark Zusak

I know, I know. I feel like I’m the only one ever who didn’t love this book, and honestly, I think the hype played into it. I didn’tย hate the book, but I was bored though most of it and kept waiting forย more because of how much I’d heard people rave about the book. This was a solid 2 stars for me, but has an overall rating on Goodreads of 4.36!!

Room by Emma Donoghue

This was another one that just didn’t live up to the hype for me. I’d heard so many people talk about how harrowing it was to read, and how emotional it made them because it was so traumatic. I didn’t feel thatย at all. I think I can chalk this one up to the fact that I read aย lot of thrillers, so while the subject of this book is sad, yes, it was nothing I hadn’t read before in more graphic detail, so I didn’t feel as emotional as everyone else seemed to feel about it. I also hated something that happened toward the end that I felt like was really unrealistic. That said, Room has an overall rating on Goodreads of 4.02.

The Fill-Inย Boyfriend by Kasie West

I really loved PS I Like You by the same author, so I was excited to read this one…and then subsequently let down. My problem with this one? I hated the main character. She was immature and stuck up, and maybe a younger audience would relate to it, but I definitely didn’t. This one has an overall rating on Goodreads of 3.92.

The Duff by Kody Keplinger

I hated this book SO.MUCH. I felt like every character was a horrible person! I wanted to like this one so much because when I read it, it was getting a lot of attention because the movie was coming out shortly after.ย I just absolutely hated the main character. She was incredibly cynical and often rude and just generally unlikeable, which made getting through the book difficult, to the point that I considered not finishing the book. The overall rating for this book on Goodreads is 3.87.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Ugh. This is another book that seems pretty polarizing, however the overall rating on Goodreads for the book is 3.85. I really didn’t like this one. I was bored, I hated the characters, and the end was predictable to me. I also struggled with the writing on this one. It just wasn’t for me.

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

With an overall rating of 3.8 on Goodreads, I had high hopes for The Good Girl, especially because I’ve heard really good things about the author. Unfortunately, almost everything in this book fell flat for me. Everything was really predictable, I didn’t connect to any of the characters, and I didn’t care what happened to them. The blurb on the book led me to believe that there would be a lot of suspense in this book, and to me, there was none. I honestly was bored throughout most of it, and there were a number of times I almost walked away from it and marked it as DNF.

**Alright, so now that I’ve made myself super vulnerable by sharing some of the books I didn’t love that I know are popular, it’s your turn! Where are some of your unpopular book opinions? Do you agree with any of the ones on my list? Let me know down in the comments!**

  1. I feel exactly the same about The Book Thief and We Were Liars! My family was very split opinion on Book Thief – 2 loved it and 2 hated it, so I felt like I had to read it and be the deciding vote. But I didn’t really love it OR hate it. It was just okay, and I was a little bored. We Were Liars, I was expecting something great and I just really really didn’t like it. It was boring and predictable and I was really disappointed with it. I liked Room, but I think that may because I read it before if ever heard anything about it so I had no expectations going in. Great post!

    • Thank you!! I’m glad you’re with me in The Book Thief! I rated it 2 stars, so I didn’t totally hate it, but definitely didn’t love it either. I read it a few years back in my book club and I’m pretty sure I was the only one who wasn’t obsessed with it ๐Ÿ˜‚ same with We Were Liars. My best friend loved it (as so many of my blogging friends) but I couldn’t get past how much I hated the characters ๐Ÿ˜‚

    • Ohh yay for someone else not loving Room! I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone else who wasn’t obsessed with it ๐Ÿ˜‚ I have to admit, I loved Caraval, but I do have some friends who didn’t love it or thought it was only okay, so you’re not totally alone! I think the hype worked to its disadvantage a little bit.

  2. I haven’t read many of these on this list, but I definitely agree with The Retribution of Mara Dyer. Still probably the worst finale I’ve ever read because everything just came out of nowhere. I liked Shatter Me, but it just went downhill for me after Book 1, so it’s actually good you skipped it! ๐Ÿ˜‚ And I ended up DNF-ing The Good Girl, but I still want to read her other books because they interest me!

    • Hahaha I like some of it but roll my eyes at others. It’s a fine line between making it still a good read just quicker and easier to read and making me roll my eyes every page because I hate the characters and their immaturity lol

  3. Hey, we are all different and like different styles! I loved Shatter Me but it was hard at first with the writing style. There are still some books I’m not a huge fan of that others thought were great, so I hear ya.

    • Exactly! I love that people have different opinions because it makes discussing the book fun. You get to see things from a perspective you may not have initially thought about! I hate when people get super mad or mean when someone doesn’t like the same books they like :/

      • I know! What a waste of energy! I talk to Melanie all the time from her blog and she and I seem to have completely opposite opinions on books (i.e. I loved Flame, she didn’t…a lot of them are ones I loved that she didn’t actually but I’m easily pleased), and we still get along great!!
It’s why the book community is supposed to be great! You love this, and I hated that! Lol!

  4. I absolutely disliked Room! I tried so hard to connect with it and found the narration to be a huge miss for me. I appreciated the author’s attempt but too much was left to guess. We knew nothing of this woman. And it was so repetitive. Also, I have not even read the rest of these ๐Ÿ˜‰ So I totally get it. I always seem to fall into the “unpopular” opinion with some of the bigger titles. Maybe I just go in expecting too much? Great post!

  5. I love reading these posts! I am totally with you on We Were Liars, I don’t understand the hype and it really irritated me! Also with Room, I did like it but didn’t find it particularly emotional and couldn’t connect with it.

  6. Bleh, I didn’t like We Were Liars either. I actually didn’t even finish it. I was just so BORED. Nothing was happening it seemed like, and I think the hype got to me on that one too.
I’M SO SAD YOU DIDN’T LIKE THE BOOK THIEF THOUGH :((( That is one of my favorites of ever. Hype is a dangerous thing ๐Ÿ˜›

  7. I honestly didnt finish Room, I didn’t even get very far into it. It was the writing style, just didn’t like the way it was written from the kids point of view. And now I have heard some not too favorable reviews from people I trust, so I don’t think I missed out on to much.

      • Yeah that’s how I felt too I’m sure it was accurate but it just wasn’t for me being the only point of view, well I didn’t finish but that was the impression I had from flipping through before I put it down.

  8. Oh no, I’m sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy the last book in the Mara Dyer series, but you’re definitely not alone. I personally loved it but I talked to a couple of people who felt the same way as you ๐Ÿ™‚
I have to say I completely agree with you about The Duff though, I had such a hard time with the main character, I did not enjoy it so much either.
